Vans Authentic Blue-Yellow Checkerboard

The Vans Authentic is the original Vans silhouette, first produced in 1966 at the Van Doren Rubber Company in Anaheim, California. Designed as a simple, flat-soled canvas deck shoe, the Authentic became the foundational footwear of skateboarding culture and has remained in continuous production ever since — a testament to a design that has never needed revision.

The Checkerboard pattern is Vans’ most recognisable graphic signature. Introduced in the late 1970s when skaters began hand-drawing the pattern onto their Vans, it was officially adopted by the brand and has since become one of the most iconic motifs in sneaker and streetwear culture globally. On the Authentic, checkerboard works with the shoe’s clean canvas construction to create a surface that is equal parts graphic and tactile — the pattern is woven into the canvas itself rather than printed on top, giving it depth and wear-resistance.

The Blue-Yellow colourway presents the checkerboard in one of its highest-contrast configurations. A blue canvas ground is interrupted by alternating yellow squares, creating a strong visual rhythm that reads clearly from a distance. The combination references the bold, primary-adjacent colour pairings common in 1970s and 80s skateboarding and surf culture, and carries a distinct energy that distinguishes it from the more neutral monochrome Checkerboard versions.

The vulcanised rubber waffle sole in white provides the flat, grip-friendly base that defines the Authentic’s profile, and white laces complete the shoe with a clean contrast note. The result is a shoe with an immediately recognisable identity — energetic and patterned, but grounded by the Authentic’s inherently simple form.
