Vans Authentic Navy-Yellow Checkerboard
The Vans Authentic is the original Vans silhouette, first produced in 1966 at the Van Doren Rubber Company in Anaheim, California. A flat-soled canvas shoe built for skate and street, it became one of the most replicated silhouettes in footwear history — and has remained in production without structural modification since its introduction.
The Navy-Yellow Checkerboard colourway applies Vans’ most recognisable graphic — the checkerboard pattern — in a two-tone combination of navy and yellow. The pairing is high-contrast by design: navy is a grounded, authoritative colour with deep roots in workwear and prep culture, while yellow operates as a sharp accent, pulling the pattern forward and giving the shoe an immediate visual presence. Together, they produce a colourway that reads as bold without relying on brightness alone — the depth of navy keeps the composition balanced.
Checkerboard on the Authentic carries cultural weight. The pattern debuted on Vans in 1977, worn by skaters as a hand-customised option before it became an official colourway, and later gained broader cultural reach through its appearance in film and music. The Navy-Yellow version positions that heritage graphic in a colour scheme that works equally well for street styling and warmer seasons — navy grounds any outfit, and yellow introduces warmth and energy without being difficult to combine
